Your motorcycle is freedom on two wheels, an adrenaline shot whenever you need one, and/or a really convenient way to commute. Whatever you use it for, you need it to be in good working order to ensure your safety and the safety of those around you. To make sure you stay on the road safely, we here at Willamette Valley Harley-Davidson have put together a few tips for bike maintenance you can do at home. If you want to know more, or you’d like to see the bikes we have for sale, contact our store in Eugene, Oregon, today!

Brake Check

Your brakes make sure you stay in control of your speed and can stop if there’s danger ahead, so they’re high on the list of parts you need to care for the most. Remember to check both front and rear brake fluid reservoirs. If they’re a bit low, simply pop off the cap and fill the fluid.

If your reservoirs are totally empty, you might have a larger issue and should bring your bike to a service department.

Your brake pads will need their own check. Make sure they’re worn evenly and smooth, If there’s corrosion or other rough textures, they may need replacing. Shaking, vibrating, or grinding while braking might mean it’s time to replace them.

Tires

Your tires need to have enough tread to provide traction, but the tread will wear naturally as you ride your bike. They’ll need replacement eventually. Check your owner’s manual to see how much low the tread can get before tire replacements are necessary.

You’ll also need to check tire pressure with a tire pressure gauge to ensure proper traction and avoid blowouts. Your owner’s manual will tell you how much psi you’ll want, and you should adjust the tire pressure to meet that number.

Fuel And Oil

Check your fuel level and fuel filter regularly. A clogged filter can cause serious engine problems, and obviously you aren’t going far without a full tank of gas. Make sure you’re using the proper type of fuel—for infrequent riding, you’ll want a higher octane fuel. Ethanol-heavy fuels can turn corrosive if they’re allowed to sit for long periods of time.

Your motor oil helps keep your engine lubricated and cool. Check your dipstick to make sure the oil is full enough and is the right color and texture. If the oil is sludgy or dark, you may need to replace it and the filter. Otherwise, just top the tank off.
