Top Motorcycle Camping Spots in Oregon

Feb. 12 2020 Miscellaneous By ___

Oregon is a state that’s filled with natural beauty, from the lush, mossy evergreen forests to the brisk and rocky Oregon Coast to the splendor of the Cascade Mountain Range that cuts through the western portion of the state. Given all this, it’s no wonder that camping is an extremely popular pastime here in the Beaver State!

If you’re an avid motorcyclist, you might be wondering how to combine your rides with some relaxing overnight camping trips that are biker-friendly. Well, wonder no more! Willamette Valley Harley-Davidson in Eugene, Oregon, is your local motorcycle dealer. To help you plan your next touring adventure, here are some of the top Oregon motorcycle camping spots scattered around the state.

Sparkplugs Motorcycle Camp (O’Brien, OR)

This particular camp is the only one in Oregon dedicated to motorcyclists, and it’s known more by word of mouth than anything else. Located off of U.S. Route 199 just north of the California border and three miles south of the town of O’Brien, Sparkplugs has 50 campsites with some tents available for you to stay in.

There is a small outdoor kitchen, but otherwise, the facilities here are rather primitive, with one shower and some pit toilets. However, the campground is within the beautiful Siskiyou National Forest and close to the Oregon Caves and Redwood National Park in northern California, so it makes a perfect stop on a long journey south!

Detroit Lake State Recreation Area (Detroit, OR)

Due west of Mt. Jefferson along North Santiam Highway is where you’ll find this campground, which abuts the nine-mile-long Detroit Lake. You won’t want for beauty here, surrounded by the forest and all its wonders. The campground features 96 tent sites with water access, showers and restroom facilities and a visitor center with information about the area, along with ice, drinks, firewood and souvenirs for sale. As for recreation, you can enjoy swimming, volleyball, horseshoes, fishing and basketball. This recreational area makes an equally great pit stop or final destination, depending on what your plans are.

Cape Lookout State Park (Netarts, OR)

Taking a ride to the Oregon Coast? Once you’ve had your fill of the waterfalls and tall, old-growth forest in the Wilson River pass, you can stay at this campground that’s on a sand spit between the Pacific Ocean and Netarts Bay. Take advantage of the 170 tent sites here, or rent one of the 13 yurts or six deluxe cabins if you’d like a little more luxury during your stay. There are hot showers and flush toilets along with water access and the campsite is open year-round. Enjoy a hike through the forest or head down to the beach to watch the waves and look for shells.

Trouthaven Cabins (Joseph, OR)

Nestled in the northeastern corner of the state is where you’ll find this luxurious campground, right on the shores of Wallowa Lake.  Ten modernized cabins with a vintage feel are equipped with everything you’ll need to have a comfortable stay as you ride through Eastern Oregon. This campground was opened in the 1950s by a World War II veteran and his wife as a family business. Today, Trouthaven is run by their children.

Among the many amenities, you’ll find ping-pong, horseshoes, tetherball, badminton, volleyball and croquet. A nature trail is perfect for hikes, while easy lake access allows for water recreation. You can even rent a boat to cruise around the lake!
