The Devil's Tail

About the Motorcycle Ride

  • 22 miles long.
  • The motorcycle ride is a destination spot for motorcycle enthusiasts all over the world. Enjoy the deepest motorcycle road in North America, which is 2000 feet deeper than the Grand Canyon.
  • It’s recommended for more experienced motorcycle riders due to the tar snakes and rock falls on the road's surface as well as the many curves and elevation changes.

Tourism Opportunities

  • Make sure to fuel up at Scotty's Hells Canyon Supply, which is the last place to get gas on the motorcycle route.
  • Take a visit to the Hells Canyon Visitor Center right after you ride over the Hells Canyon Dam.

Directions

  • Start from historic Baker City and ride east on Hwy 86 along the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway to Oxbow, which will have the trail's starting point.
  • Take the Devil's Tail, also called National Forest Service Rd #454, across the Snake River into Idaho until you reach the Hells Canyon Visitor Center.

The Estacada to Detroit Lake Highway

About the Motorcycle Ride

  • 70 miles long.
  • This motorcycle ride goes through Mt. Hood National Forest, giving you beautiful scenic views of tree covered mountains and a flowing river.
  • The area does have snow at various points during the year, so be sure to check the snow status before you plan a trip.
  • The route will offer riders twists, turns, potholes, and dips.

Tourism Opportunities

  • There are some campsites throughout the route.
  • Once you reach Detroit Lake, there are hotels, restaurants, and a marina where you can rent boats (make sure to reserve the boat in advance if you’ll be visiting on a summer weekend).
  • There is an annual White Water Festival close to Estacada and a fishing derby in Detroit.

Directions

  • Start in Estacada and go on the Clackamas Highway (also called route 224) going south.
  • Ride for about 70 miles until you hit the endpoint of Detroit.
  • Know that the road's name changes to Clackamas River Road when you reach the town of Ripplebrook, but it is still the same road. Then the name changes to Breitenbush Road when you reach Breitenbush, but it is still the same road.

McKenzie Hwy

About the Motorcycle Ride

  • 37 miles long.
  • One of few places in the United States where you can drive through a lava flow field.
  • The scenery includes dense evergreen forests surrounded by volcanoes.
  • The motorcycle route goes over high quality pavement surface due to little traffic and the road only being open about half the year.

Tourism Opportunities

  • Enjoy an observation point made out of lava/basalt rock at the top of the pass, which provides a great view of the area. Visitors can look through holes in the wall that identify the various surrounding peaks.
  • There are trailheads for hiking paths through the lava fields.

Directions

  • Start at the junction on Oregon State Highways 126 and 242, which will be just west of Belknap Springs.
  • Follow Hwy 242 east until you reach Sisters, Oregon.
