Making History

The story began with childhood friends, William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson, who dreamt of creating motorized bikes. While their early attempts couldn’t conquer the hills of Milwaukee, by 1904, their models no longer needed pedals and could sustain their own speed. That same year, their first product was released on the market. 

In times of hardship, the company came to the country’s aid. When the First World War broke out, Harley-Davidson® contributed to the war effort by building over 20,000 J Models for the US military. Then in 1918, the first American to enter Germany after the armistice did so on a Harley-Davidson® motorcycle, equipped with a sidecar. By the end of the decade, Harley-Davidson® was known as the “largest motorcycle manufacturer on the planet.” Finally, during World War II, the company built 90,000 more military-grade motorcycles by the end of the war.
